Princely Treasures: Reliefs
Two precious reliefs by the Italian artist Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi (1656–1740) figure on the new commemoratives which Philatelie Liechtenstein is issuing in continuation of the "Princely Treasures" series. Both these works of art have come into the possession of the Princely House von und zu Liechtenstein in the past few years. The bronze relief "Christ on the Mount of Olives" (face value CHF 1.40) shows an unusual iconography for which there is no evident precedent in the Gospel: Christ, after passing the night before his arrest awake praying in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives, is shown passing out in the arms of two angels. The second, a terracotta relief dating from between 1710 and 1720, bears the title "Christ's Descent from the Cross" (face value CHF 1.00). Produced by Adolf Tuma using a steel engraving / offset combination, the stamps are being issued in sheetlets of nine stamps each.
